You say to yourself you won’t have that wine on a Tuesday night, just weekends, right? By Wednesday, you’re uncorking a bottle.
Or maybe you swear you are done shouting at the kids, but the moment they misbehave, there you go again slipping back into old habits.
And you think, why can’t I just stop?
Here’s the truth…
Your conscious mind made that promise not to open the bottle of wine or lose your temper; however, your unconscious mind (that’s the one that’s actually driving the bus) is the one in charge, making the decisions!
How does the unconscious mind work?
The unconscious mind influences so much of our behaviour without us even knowing about it. It stores memories, learns skills and runs automatic physical functions without you having to give it active thought.
So, your unconscious mind learns by experience and develops patterns of responses based on that. This experience could be yesterday, last week, or even from when you were a child. But now, every time that situation presents itself, the unconscious mind automatically runs the same old program without asking your conscious mind’s permission.
The thing is, you can’t willpower your way out of this. You can, of course, push back for a while if you like. Manage a whole two weeks not doing that thing. However, eventually your unconscious mind will push back harder, and you will end up doing more of the very thing you said you wouldn’t, simply because it’s in charge.
This is why changing at that deeper level works, because once your unconscious mind sees there’s a better way, it just takes it.
Despite what you might keep telling yourself, you’re not broken! It’s simply that your brain has just been running an old, outdated program, over and over. But we can change that using neuro linguistic programming therapy (NLP therapy).
As an experienced NLP practitioner, I help people change bad habits every day. No more pushing things to the back of your mind or convincing yourself you’ll be able to change one day. Through open conversations, we dive a little deeper and address the issue at the core.
If you’re ready to take that step, I offer a free 30 minute consultation. No pressure, just an informal chat where we can get to know each other and see if online NLP coaching or NLP therapy sessions are right for you.
